In the Kuna language, “Abya Yala” means “fully mature land” or “the land of vital blood”. Since pre-Columbian times, the term had been used to refer to what we now know as “America”, the moniker imposed on the continent by its European colonizers. Honoring this tradition, this program brings together nine short films produced in the vast southern lands of Abya Yala. A landscape of tales and stories depicting the myriad layers, languages and aesthetics used by present-day filmmakers from what is known as “Latin America” or by migrant filmmakers in the diaspora.

The program first leads us barefoot into the tangible memories of colonisation, inviting us to reflect on contemporary issues such as the racialization of desire or the pornographic structure of the state and military violence. It then shifts towards the intimate and biographical, reflecting the many languages present in pornographic field: poems, passionate letters, and bodily proclaims. It ends with two short films that take us deeper into sexual and fictional memories, breaking down early pornographic experiences into new sexual and creative possibilities.

In Rio Grande, Tierra del Fuego, the Selk'nam descendant Marcos García tells the horrific story of ethnocide of the Fuegian peoples. His testimony makes us aware of how this history continues to repeat itself; and how the precursors of these massacres and their heirs - now powerful businessmen and politicians - are still responsible for the usurpation of native lands and the violent repression against communities. In the past, it was the mutilation of Selk'nam ears; now, in the midst of the Chilean social rebellion, it is the eyes of the mestizos that are being shot by the police.
MariaBasura and other activists decide to take a revenge that will lead them to a small town in Asturias, Spain, birthplace of Jose Menendez Menendez, one of the forefathers of the genocide against the native peoples of the south.
